Will Lippert SolidSteps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and some RVs. The fold-down steps from Lippert lift up to latch into your camper's doorway for storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

SolidStep Door Flanges

The Lippert SolidSteps install inside your camper's doorframe. Measuring for this may seem tricky, but once you know what to look for, figuring out the right fit for your RV doorway is easy.

SolidStep Door Flanges

Measure between the door frame flanges - the doorway width - to determine the step size that will fit into your camper's doorway. You will need a doorway that is at least 25" wide to 28-7/8" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 24" wide to 36" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

To make sure your doors will close when the steps are installed, measure from the top of the threshold plate to the bottom of the door. You will need a gap of about 1/4" to 3/8" to allow the door to close over the step's mounting plate.

The doorway threshold will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

SolidStep Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will tell you how many steps you need.

Once you know your doorway width and entry heigh measurements, the chart below will tell you which part number you need. This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Doorway WidthEntry Heightetrailer Part Number
24"22" - 28" LC713662
25" - 28.9"22" - 28"LC733931
27" - 36"LC791572
35" - 44"LC791574
29" - 36"22" - 28"LC733932
27" - 36"LC791573
35" - 44"LC791575

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Place the mounting bracket into the camper doorway
  3. Extend until feet touch the ground
  4. Center the steps in the doorframe
  5. Slide assembly forward until firmly placed against outside threshold
  6. Install fasteners through the mounting holes into the camper floor

-Secure the hardware (not included) but dont tighten

  7. Lift the step assembly into the doorway and make sure the latching arm engages

-If necessary, loosen the bolts on the latching arm to adjust

  8. Tighten the latching arm bolts and the floor fasteners

We bought the SolidStep to replace our broken fold out steps. They work well and are very stable as long as you’re on level ground. When we stop for a break or just need to grab something from the trailer and you’re not on level ground, you have to adjust the leg extensions out and-or get some blocks to put under the leg extensions. Both legs must touch the ground. If you don’t do this, the mounting plate, brackets or the steps can bend or can pull the mounts loose and If you’re in a hurry to get inside, rain etc. it can take longer to get in. Had we known what we know now we would have gone back with the 4 step fold outs. I’m sure these steps work well for some but not us.

There are a few upgrades I have made to my camper that I sit back and think "why did I wait so long to do this?" This would be one of them. The stability and comfort of walking up these steps is incomparable to the factory steps. The ease of installation made this a no brainer. Why did I wait so long to replace the factory steps?

As I said in the original review, why did I wait so long to replace the factory steps? They are still great. Virtually no sign of wear. I now have some friends that have bought them. They love them also. This has been great upgrade to my camper.

I just received my Solidsteps and stainless hand rail both products where easy to install and for me that was good look forward to many years of use
Thanks again to Noah at etrailer great job

by:

Great just needs little bit better insulation love them and my wife really loves them so that’s what MATTERS

by:

Perfect replacement for my old tri-fold steps. Really like the adjustable bottom feet for uneven terrain. I did have to trim the aluminum lip flush on my existing threshold which stuck up 1/8” for the new ladder mounting bracket to lie flat but it was easy to do with my grinder. Very happy with these new steps which are easy to fold up and deploy.

Steps have worked perfectly with no issues.

by:

Excellent product ! Install was a breeze! Only problem was the screen door clearance, our 5th wheel is a 2010 and just a little trim and all is good!

by:

Paula was very knowledgeable in helping me purchase the correct item for my application. Shipping was on time, but 4 stars because the packaging came apart and parts exposed luckily nothing was missing

by:

This was a no brainer. I have bad knees and the old existing high bouncy steps made it a pain. I like the wide treads and for a little extra get a good handrail.

by:

Very sturdy steps....best upgrade we have made to our camper yet. Easy install and quick delivery! Would recommend these steps!

by:

Great product Install in just under half an hour did not give it 5 stars because he Shipping crate was damaged and one large had to be bent back And this one had no hardware my previous one had hardware I'm glad I saved them. The stairs are solid and my. Wife and dogs love them

by:

Great product! Installation was made with instructions provided. The only thing that could use attention are the pins for the leg adjustments at bottom of stairs. I’m 73, and generally struggle with most everything, (getting old is a struggle). I’m in the process of trying to find a different pin to use.

by:

I purchased these steps to allow my wife who has had both hips replaced an easier time getting in and out of our RV. I modified the steps to create a 5 inch rise on each step. It has worked out great for her. (and me too). It would be great of you could offer a product that already had 5 inch rise steps. There are a lot of folks like us that would like them

by:

These steps are a big Improvement to our toy hauler easy to install less than 10 minutes all you need is a battery-powered drill and a 7/16 wrench these was installed in a 2019 momentum toy hauler in the garage highly recommended steps for any 5th wheel

by:

The packages came on the date anticapated and in good condition. Although both packages had been opened and poorly retaped shut. The installation instruction were clear and well written. Installation was easy. I did need to make minor alterations to the exiting threshold to make it fit. The steps are solid, work on a variety of grades and makes it much safer to get in and out of our 5th wheel.

by:

Installed in my 2009 Heartland Landmark. Easy peezy to install. Only complaint is the box was so tore up in shipping that none of the bag of hardware was included so had to run to Lowe's for the 8 #10 1.5" screws (bought stainless steel to prevent rust). Also.....the threshold of the stairs stuck up too high for the door to shut so I had to do some sledge hammer adjusting (put a towel over the threshold while pounding as not to scratch the pretty flat black paint)

by:

Wish we had bought this when they first came out. Made getting in and out of our 5th wheel so much easier. With the installation video it was a snap to install but it is much easier to have a person on the inside stabilizing the steps while drilling the screws into place.

This step was purchased yo replace the original 9 y/o Solid Step my fiver came with.

by:

In the last few months I have spent around $5000 on parts for my trailer and all orders have come with free shipping and all parts fit as they should of. E-trailer has a large selection of parts. It has been a pleasure dealing with them.

by:

The Lippert SolidStep RV Steps solved the problem of unstable fold-out steps on our 5th wheel camper and with the added fourth step, we now have a more comfortable, stable, and safer entry into the camper.
The folks at etrailer certainly take customer service to heart and make ordering products easy, and the shipping crew had our steps out the door and delivered within just a few days.

by:

We ordered and installed the 4 step unit. The steps are very sturdy and we are very pleased with construction . We have a Montana 5th wheel 2011 model. My husband did have to grind down the thresh hole a little so that the door would close. Also we had to remove Screen Defender from the screen door. The steps are so nice that the adjustments were worth the adjustments.
Step Designers maybe allow for the Screen Defenders this would be really nice for those of us with pets.

by:

Had to do some notching on the bottom of the door frame but overall if you just have general knowledge of how to use a drill these are easy to install. Had them in in about an hour with some help holding them up before I could adjust it to hold the door. Very sturdy and I don’t wake my child up leaving for work in the mornings from the camper shaking.

Austin, that’s a great shot looking down the steps, and that “get lost” rug fits the camper life perfectly. Sounds like you knocked the install out pretty quickly too. A little trimming is sometimes part of the process, but getting them in within an hour is a solid win. And the fact that they’re sturdy enough to keep things quiet inside is huge, especially with a kid sleeping. Where do you usually take your camper out to?

  • Can Step Be Added to Lippert Solid Step
Hey Ron! Sorry Lippert didn't get back to you yet, they can be pretty hit or miss on responses. Did you email them? I usually try to use their chat but even that is pretty dependent on who you actually get ahold of. As far as adding a step goes, I don't know of a good way you could accomplish that even with modifications. The only way I can think of to "add" a step is to use a foldable step like the # S-150 and sit it at the bottom. Outside of that the best option would be to replace...

The dimensions that you provide for your doorway width and threshold height do not really coincide. Therefore, I recommend that you confirm this one more time as we do not have a set of the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps that will fit the measurements that you listed. If the threshold height of a trailer measures 36" then you can use either the triple step or quad step version of the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps.
